Founded by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, Stone Brewing has come a long way since opening up in San Diego, California. They have been listed on the Inc. 500 | 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies list 11 times, and have been called the “All-time Top Brewery on Planet Earth” by BeerAdvocate magazine twice. Stone has also donated more than $3 million dollars to charity.
Stone opened in San Marcos in 1996 at the location currently home to Port Brewing Company and The Lost Abbey. The gargoyle came next. Local designer/illustrator Thomas K. Matthews created the original gargoyle in 1996. Besides being carved from stone, it represents the European inspiration behind some of their first beers and is a guardian symbol meant to ward off evil spirits. In their case…cheap ingredients, pasteurisation and chemical additives…the modern-day evil spirits of beer!
As the ninth-largest craft brewer in the U.S. and with it's breweries in Richmond, Virginia & Berlin, Germany, Stone joins artisanal brewers across the world in the quest to show the public that there are more…and better…choices beyond the world of industrial beer.
Renowned for its West Coast style IPAs, Stone Brewing has set the global benchmark for fresh, hop forward beers since their inception over 20 years ago and has built an enviable reputation for its memorable, bold and innovative beer.
